The Union City Schools serves all students who live within Union City and meet state age and health requirements.

For any student moving into the district during the summer, a parent or guardian should call their school before the start of the new school year to register.

For any student who moves into the school district during the course of the school year (between September and June), a parent or guardian should contact Central Registration.

Kindergarten children must be five (5) years of age on or before SEPTEMBER 30 OF THE SCHOOL YEAR in order to partake in kindergarten classes.

The curricula or technique must be proven to work in the classroom by "sound, objective measurement." In other words, the evaluation must be statistically significant and be based on test scores.
A second definition for scientifically based learning is "research that involves the application of rigorous, systematic and objective procedures to obtain reliable and valid knowledge relevant to education activities and programs and employs systematic, empirical methods that draw on observation or experience."

The Early Reading First component of NCLB is intended to prepare young children to enter kindergarten with the necessary language, cognitive, and early reading skills to prevent reading difficulties and ensure school success.
It is hoped that early intervention will reduce the need to spend special needs funding on older students.
Early Reading First will not only provide resources and training to pre-school teachers, but will also benefit teachers in all grades by helping to increase the number of children who enter school ready to learn to read.

Reading First is that component of NCLB that mandates reading proficiency for all children by the third grade.
Specifically, Reading First identifies the five areas of reading instruction that have been shown to be effective in helping children learn to read: (1) phonemic awareness, (2) phonics, (3) vocabulary development, (4) reading fluency, including oral reading skills, and (5) reading comprehension strategies.

The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB), signed into law by President Bush in January 2002, reauthorizes the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), which was adopted in 1966.
The sweeping reforms of NCLB are intended to reduce the number of experimental programs created under the ESEA and re-focus educational dollars on proven, research-based approaches that will help most children to learn.

In brief, NCLB calls for:

•Annual testing of all public school students in reading and math for grades 3-8 and high school by the 2005-06 school year
•Annual report cards on school performance for parents, voters and taxpayers
•Ensuring that every child reads by the 3rd grade
•A highly qualified teacher in every public school classroom by the 2005-06 school year (Title I teachers must be highly qualified by the 2002-03 school year.)

Did you know...
Union City schools serve as emergency shelters in case of severe weather, natural disaster or threat to homeland security. They served our community during the 9/11 attacks.

Taking shelter
If TV or radio tells you to go to a shelter, report to your closest local school. If you are not sure where to go call the UCPD’s Office of Emergency Management at 201-348-5779.

Securing our Future
Three of the new schools we are building in Union City will have modern “full-use” generators to keep sheltered residents safe and comfortable with electricity, lights, heat, AC, refrigeration and kitchen facilities.

Snow or bad weather
Closings and delays for Union City Schools will be announced on 1010 WINS AM radio. Parents, listen for a call from the district’s automatic telephone home notification system
